Restoration & Timber Framing
Ancient timber framed buildings are one of the most fascinating but least understood legacies of our medieval past. Often these date back to the 15th or 14th century and the original structures can be covered over or cut away to the point where they are no longer legible. We have extensive knowledge and understanding of historic timber frame building techniques and have worked on many projects involving the renovation of complex ancient structures. The tradition of oak framing has enjoyed a revival in recent years and we have been involved in the construction of several new oak framed buildings.
The restoration of derelict or mutilated historic buildings can be one of the most rewarding and worthwhile of activities and can breathe fresh life and hope into failing places and communities. We feel it is essential that restoration work is carried out to the highest standards of workmanship and authenticity and have no qualms about the reinstatement of missing features provided this is done with accuracy and skill. Our practice has, in the past, used its expertise in a variety of spectacular transformations and we welcome the opportunity to work on and advise on restoration projects of any type.
